Based on the Chinese novel 'Journey To The West' in which the monk, Samjang goes to the mythical temple to study but finds that he must escort the Princess Cheol-seon safely through a variety of fantastic dangers.

The royal family has no male heirs to carry on the bloodline so, when the queen gives birth to yet another princess, the head of the court maids exchanges the infant princess with the newborn son of a servant.

The princess and her husband are unable to publically show their affection for each other due to the strict rules governing their society. Their one attempt at breaking these rules results in their being exiled and they are forced to live in poverty and isolation
